Topic Name-Recall(Slide3)

Transition from Analogy to Technical Concept(Slide 5)

Whenever we use a computer, mobile phone, or the internet, we leave behind digital footprints without even realizing it.

For example:

Writing a document creates a file.

Sending an email leaves a record.

Browsing a website saves browsing history.

All of these can become digital evidence if an investigation takes place.Think of digital evidence like the clues left behind after an activity.

Just as muddy footprints can show where someone walked, digital footprints can show what someone did on a computer or mobile device.

Volatile and Non-Volatile Data

Digital data can be classified based on whether it remains available after a device is powered off

Volatile

Non-Volatile

Volatile data exists only while the computer or device is powered on. Once the power is turned off, this data is lost permanently.

Non-volatile data remains stored even after the device is powered off.

Example :-

Example :-

Importance

Stores valuable evidence that disappears after shutdown.

Importance

Can be examined even after the device is powered off.

Physical and Logical Evidence

Digital evidence can be collected in two different forms.

Logical Evidence

Physical Evidence

Physical evidence refers to the actual electronic devices involved in an investigation.

Logical evidence refers to the digital information stored on physical devices.

Examples :-

Physical evidence helps investigators identify where digital evidence is stored.

Examples :-

Logical evidence is examined to understand user activities and system events.
